Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth. 3 John 5-8
John is extolling Gaius for giving financial support and sponsorship to those who are vocational Christian workers. John farther identifies these workers as those who “went forth for His name’s (Jesus Christ) sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.” John goes into detail and explains that all who willingly choose to partner financially with a vocational Christian worker is to send them on their mission in a manner worthy of God. In a manner worthy of God means that we give to provide for their needs as they give themselves over fully to ministry and missions. John expounds a profound truth and an important missional principle by confirming that the one who gives to the vocational worker and the one who ministers vocationally are fellow-workers for the truth. We find farther evidence of this in the amazing passage located at John 8:1-4.
Luke 8:1-3 Names of God Bible (NOG)
Women Who Supported Jesus
8 After this, Yeshua traveled from one city and village to another. He spread the Good News about God’s kingdom. The twelve apostles were with him. 2 Also, some women were with him. They had been cured from evil spirits and various illnesses. These women were Mary, also called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; 3 Joanna, whose husband Chusa was Herod’s administrator; Susanna; and many other women. They provided financial support for Yeshua and his disciples.
It never ceases to amaze me each time that I read that passage that Jesus who modeled all aspects of ministry for us, showed us that He being the Firstborn Son of the Living God – had a group of financial supporters. This same Jesus who turned water into wine, fed thousands through the multiplication of the bread and the fish, healed the sick and cast out demons – this same Jesus had financial supporters. Interestingly enough the group of sponsors were by in large ladies and not only were they financial backers, but were also willing to travel with Jesus and His disciples from one city and village to another. There were a multitude of women helping to provide means, laundry services, financial gifts to the ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus modeled for us clearly what “faith based” ministry is all about. It is an utter dependence upon God to provide for our needs the favor and the resources of men and women of God through whom God’s blessings can flow.
How can one go unless he is sent?
Romans 10:15-17 The Message (MSG)
14-17 But how can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven’t heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That’s why Scripture exclaims,
A sight to take your breath away!
Grand processions of people
telling all the good things of God!
But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: “Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?” The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to.
Your Partnership In God’s Plan
