CALLED

THE CALLING OF GOD

To be called by God – Who would believe it? I became a Christian at the age of 16,  from a non-churched family and two weeks later I found myself on my very first mission trip to Honduras, Central America. The things that God showed me and the things that I experienced caused me to deeply love God and the Latin peoples. I returned for more each year during high school and then…

In my Senior year of high school I thought that I had my life charted out, with plans to attend a Christian college and to become a youth minister. That summer after graduating high school I returned to Honduras where the Lord placed a definitive call upon my life to lay down my life for Him and to become a Missionary to Latin America. We were way back in the jungles of Honduras in a village called Las Delicious de Cuyamel and I didn’t speak Spanish at that time so I was providing rudimentary first aide to people as someone else preached. They brought to me a beautiful seven year old girl who had been playing in the jungle and a stick had inserted through her leg. Having no hospital, medical clinic, nor heath care workers in the region the parents had treated the child with a local jungle solution and wrapped it in cloth and banana leaves tied down with an old string. When I removed the layers and her injury to her leg was revealed I was suddenly agast! It was clear to me that none of the basic first aide items that I had were going to be sufficient to help this beautiful little Hispanic girl keep her leg. The red lines and streaks looked like downtown Dallas interchanges. Suddenly I was overwhelmed and it was in that still quiet moment that the Lord spoke to my spirit as clearly as anyone ever has spoken to me and He said, “Who will go for us? Who will help these people?” Before I could even think my heart had responded, “Here am I! Send me!”

God had just called me to become a Missionary to Latin America and I knew it as sure as anything else that I might know. It was a done deal and I loved it! Upon returning to the U.S. I quickly discovered that not everyone, including my own church elders, would be as excited or helpful in helping me to walk out my calling. I managed, with the help of God, to get 10 sponsors at $30 each for a period ending in 6 months. Then the Lord directed me to sell my truck, with which I was able to purchase a “One Way” plane ticket to Costa Rica. When I asked the Lord about the other half of the plane ticket He said, “Don’t worry about it. You won’t be coming back for a long time!”

This is how my life of faith as an 18 year old Missionary to Latin America began…
