Have you ever been caught up in a major earthquake? I was in El Salvador helping after the first major earthquake when a second quake struck. I can tell you that it is horrifying. I’ve been in some other quakes but nothing like this one. I saw grown men crying, and putting handkerchiefs to their faces and trembling in fear. The earth continually moving under our feet as if we were standing on a square of styrofoam on the water’s surface. It felt like the earth might open up at any moment and swallow us alive.
Just yesterday at church I met a Hispanic couple and she was from Mexico and he is from El Salvador. When I asked him which part of El Salvador he was from he said, “San Miguel” The 7.6 (later estimated to be 7.7 or 7.9) quake struck with the epicenter 60 miles (100 km) SW of San Miguel, El Salvador. It made me think that I stood in Santa Tecla where the mountain came down and in San Miguel and many other places in El Salvador. I saw entire schools collapsed upon students, towns and villages devastated. The Bible talks quite a bit about earthquakes, but to live through a major one while serving the Lord in a foreign country is unforgettable, yet we were able to help organize and speak into the lives of many pastors and ministers who led a nationwide rebuilding effort. They ministered to people for the long term. The devil is a liar and would have like to overcome me in that nation, but my God is forever strong. The very next day our micro bus was hit broadside at high speed by a huge commuter bus. The van was totally destroyed, but we were all well by God’s grace…
Can you imagine when Jesus arose – the quake came fast and sudden and strong! It came because an angels of God had descended to earth to roll back the stone where Jesus then walked out to resurrection power, a throne, enemies being overcome, the church, a Kingdom to come, a New Jerusalem to come – It all happened with a major earthquake:
Matthew 28:2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.
Next time you hear about or experience a great earthquake remember what’s in the Word of God.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.
